From Western Australia, Adrian Monger competed in athletics and boxing in his youth and took up rowing after moving to Victoria to study at Geelong Grammar School and later at the University of Melbourne. He was on the University of Melbourne eights crew that won the Oxford and Cambridge Cup (trophy awarded to the winner of the Australian University Championship in coxed eights) in 1953 and the Victorian eights crew that won the Kings Cup (Australian national championships in coxed eights) in 1954 and 1956, placing second in 1955. The highlight of his competitive career was at the 1956 Olympics, where the Australian eights crew won a bronze medal.
Monger retired from competitive rowing soon after the Melbourne Olympics and concentrated on his work as a stock broker. But his passion was teaching and from 1964-74 he was a teacher and rowing coach at the Geelong Grammar School, except for one year when he taught at Eton College. In 1975 Monger returned to Western Australia and from 1975-84 taught economics, accounting and commerce at Scotch College in Perth. In 1985 Monger became the Scotch College’s first Development Officer, establishing the public relations, publicity and fundraising departments, and significantly supporting the Old Scotch Collegians organisation. He was also the rowing coach at Scotch College from 1975-2007 and in 1997 and 1998 coached the University of Western Australia Boat Club crew that won the Oxford and Cambridge Cup in both years.
