Biography

West German bantamweight boxer Stefan Gertel, brother of Helmut Gertel, lost his first round bout at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to the French boxer Louis Gomis, retiring after round two due to a fractured jaw. From 1978-83 and in 1985 and 1988 Gertel won national titles in different weight divisions, and in 1981 won a bantamweight bronze medal at the European Amateur Championships. Like his brother, Gertel never turned professional, but did win 275 of nearly 300 amateur bouts. Gertel was a trained office clerk.
