Peter Hess from Leverkusen claimed the West German amateur boxing title as a lightweight from 1970-72, and was then nominated for the 1972 München Olympics. After a surprising first round win against Cuban boxer Enrique Regüeiferos he was knocked out in the second round by Norwegian Sven Erik Paulsen. Hess won West German amateur titles from 1970-72 and 1976. During his career he was overshadowed by charismatic boxer René Weller.
