Canadian rower Stephen Beatty competed internationally during the 1980s after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. Beatty was part of the eight crew that won silver at the 1983 World Rowing Championships in Germany. The following year he rowed in the coxless fours at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. The Canadian team finished fourth in their heat and third in their repêchage heat. From there they won the B Final to finish seventh overall.
