Biography

After coming to Canada in 1952, German-born Max Wieczorek played football and rugby in high school, and then switched to rowing as a student at the University of British Columbia. In 1962, he reached the finals of the eights at the 1962 World Championships and also competed at that year’s British Empire and Commonwealth Games. His greatest success in that event came at the 1963 Pan American Games, where he captured gold with the Canadian crew. His final major international outing was the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where his country was ninth in the eights. He later worked in the investment industry.
