Biography

Gérald Maquat was a longtime member of the rowing team of the Union Sportive Métropolitane des Transports in Paris throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He was the winner of two National Championships in 1936 and 1941, and a European Championship in 1947.

Maquat was born in Switzerland and lived in Paris in the 1930s with his brother Robert, a watchmaker. He was the eldest and most experienced member of the French fours squad. Fresh off of their European title and going into the Olympics as medal favorites in the fours event, the team of Maquat, Jean-Paul Pieddeloup, René Lotti, Jean-Pierre Souche and young coxswain Marcel Boigegrain would see a disappointing result as they failed to qualify for the finals after losing out to the United States in the semifinal.
