Biography

Rower Ilona Richter was a member of the East German gold winning coxed eights at both the 1976 Montréal and 1980 Moskva Olympics. In 1974 and 1975 she also won gold medals at the World Championships with the eights, and in 1979 added a silver. In 1977, Richter won another world gold with the coxed fours. Domestically, she won the East German nationals in 1972 with the quadruple sculls, with the coxed fours in 1977, and with the eights in 1974-75.

Richter later studied physics and crystallography and graduated in 1987. She then worked with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing after re-unification.
