With his twin brother, Jörg, Bernd Landvoigt was one of the most titled rowers in German history. Together the twins competed in the 1972 Olympics with East Germany in the coxed eights, winning a bronze medal. The twins then formed a famous and internationally known coxless pair, and were only beaten once in that event, winning 179 out of 180 races. They won Olympic gold medals in 1976 and 1980, were World Champions in 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1979, and European Champions in 1973. In 1974, 1978 and 1979 they also claimed East German titles. In 1980 the pair defeated the Pimenov twins Yury and Nikolay from the Soviet Union, a unique moment in Olympic history.
Bernd Landvoigt was the younger of the twins by a few minutes. Bernd later became a coach with SC Dynamo Potsdam and then the German Rowing Federation DRV. He married his teammate Viola Goretzki and his nephew, Ike, also competed at the Olympics.
