Biography

Manfred Schmorde was an East German rower who was a member of the coxed eights crew that won the bronze medal at the 1972 München Olympics. The boat lost the silver medal by only 6/100 seconds against the US. In 1970 Schmorde won the East German nationals with the coxed pairs, and the silver medal at the Worlds. In 1971 he was East German Champion with the coxed fours, and also earned a silver medal at the Europeans. By profession, the trained bricklayer worked as a truck driver and ship’s master.
