Beate Schramm

Beate Schramm represented East Germany in the quadruple sculls at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and won the gold medal. Four years later at Barcelona, she represented re-unified Germany in the single sculls, but finished a disappointing 12th.

Schramm started her career with two Youth World Championship titles, in the single sculls in 1982 and 1984. In 1986 she partnered non-Olympian Sylvia Schwabe in the double sculls, and captured the world title. After a fifth place at the 1987 Worlds, Schramm moved to the quadruple sculls but, it was in the double sculls that she won three more world golds. in 1989, she with Jana Sorgers, and in 1990 and 1991 won two more golds with Kathrin Boron.

Domestically, Schramm won the East German national title in 1986 with Schwabe, and the German single sculls national title in 1991 and 1992. Schramm was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. She worked with the tax authority in Brandenburg, and later with the Federal Criminal Police Office.
