Biography

Jana Thieme was a German rower who placed fifth with Manuela Lutze in the double sculls at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Thieme then changed her partner to Kathrin Boron and won the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games. Thieme also won six World Championships, in the single sculls in 1993, double sculls in 1999, and the quadruple sculls four times, in 1989 (representing the former GDR), 1995, and 1997-98. She also added a double sculls bronze medal in 1994.

Thieme was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. Domestically, she won eight national titles. In the single sculls she gained titles in 1991 and 1993, in the double sculls in 2000, and with the quadruple sculls in 1992, 1995, and 1997-99. Thieme later worked in the sports department with the municipality of her hometown, Halle on Saale.
