The boat was eliminated in the repêchage semi-finals, after finishing third behind second-placed qualifiers Italy by over nine seconds. Kaschlun rowed in the coxless fours for ETUF Essen, was runner-up at the West German Championships in 1955, and won the title in 1956. In 1956 the boat also won the bronze medal at the European Championships and the following year he won the gold medal. Therefore the members were awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, the highest sport award that the German Government awards to sportsmen.
Gunther and Walther Kaschlun were engaged as sports administrators at their home club ETUF Essen. In the German Rowing Association Gunther impressed with his concepts and ideas for press work. He returned to regattas as a referee - later with an international license - and was a member of the Rowing Club Germany and the German Olympic Society. In 1974 he became head of the so-called “Hügelregatta”, and helped them organize a renowned international regatta and was also a regular host for German and international championships.
