Biography

Károly Győry started his rowing career in Szent István EE and after the merger continued in Hungária EE. Between 1933-1942 he won 15 national championship titles in different disciplines. Győry is one of the most successful Hungarian rowers in the European Championships: four-time gold medalist (1933-1934 coxed pairs, 1934 eights, 1935 coxless pairs) and two-time silver medalist (1937-1938 both times with the eights). At the 1935 World College Games he won two more gold medals in the coxless pairs and eights.

At the 1936 Summer Olympic Games he finished in fourth place with his partner Tibor Mamusich in the coxless pairs. They also competed in coxed pairs, but did not start in the semi-final, due to the heavy schedule of the competition. In 1942, after winning his 100th victory in the Novi Sad competition, he retired from racing and first worked as a coach for Hungária EE and then for BEAC. He regularly competed in cross-country skiing for MAC. In 1934, he took fourth place in the Hungarian championship in the 18 km distance and was included in the national team preparing for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics.

He worked as a civil servant at MTI (Hungarian News Agency). He died at the relatively young age of 34 under unknown circumstances in 1944.
