Einar Sommerfeldt rowed as a member of the Christiania Roklub in the eight at the 1912 Olympic Games. The boat did not advance to the second round.
Sommerfeldt completed an apprenticeship in shipbuilding in Glasgow from 1908-09. He then studied shipbuilding at the Norwegian Technical University and graduated in 1915. Sommerfeldt started his career as ship constructor at Nylands Verksted in Kristiania (now Oslo). From 1916-20, he worked for various shipbuilding companies in the United States. After returning to Norway in 1920, Sommerfeldt was employed by Star Contrapropeller Ltd. In Oslo. In 1923, he returned to his former company Nylands Verksted.
In 1923, he married Hildur Agnete Bertnes. The couple had one son but, who also became a ship’s engineer. The marriage was divorced in 1930.
