Biography

Ejnar Tønsager won bronze as coxswain in the outriggers coxed fours at the Stockholm Olympic Games. The boat from the Christiana Roklub beat Austria (Leitmeritz) by abandonment in the first round and the Belgian boat from Gand in the second. In the semi-final, they narrowly lost to the eventual silver medallists from the Thames Rowing Club. In the 1908 Olympics in London, he coxed the Norwegian eight which did not advance to round two. Ejnar was the older brother of his 1912 teammate Haakon Tønsager. In 1918, Eijnar published a booklet about training in rowing.

Tønsager graduated from the commercial school in 1907 and then spent some time in foreign countries, particularly in Germany. He worked for five years as chief accountant and another 10 years as manager in various branches. From 1927-34 he was chief accountant of the newspaper Morgenposten until he took over the management from his father in 1934. Tønsager was also chairman of various business associations including the Oslo Newspaper Association (1935-38) and was member of Norwegian Newspaper Owners Association from 1930.

In 1915, he married Esther Schibsted Bull. The couple had one son and one daughter. During the 1920, he developed an enthusiasm for mountaineering, hunting, and dog breeding. He received several awards from Norwegian dog breeding clubs (English Setters, Pointing Dogs) and judges organisations. In later life he also wrote books abouts hunting and dogs.
