Biography

A member of the Garda, the Irish National Police Force, Joe Casey took up boxing in 1959, and the following year won the Irish heavyweight title by outpointing the defending champion, Paddy Lyons. One month later, Casey won the international open police title at the Albert Hall in London by beating the Italian police champion Penna.

Casey went to the Roma (Rome) Olympics but lost on points to Obrad Sretenović of Yugoslavia in the only heavyweight contest to take place in first round, with 15 competitors getting byes to the second round. Consequently, Casey was placed last of the 17 entrants. The bout with Sretenović at the Palazzo della Sport started at 1.15 in the morning. Casey retained his Irish title in 1961 by beating Tommy Bruce.
