Biography

Dubliner George Kelly of North City Boxing Club was the amateur featherweight boxing champion of Ireland in 1927. He was chosen for the Irish boxing team at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and competed in the featherweight division, losing in the first round to Ricardt Madsen of Denmark. Later that year, he was also a competitor at the Tailteann Games held in Dublin. By early 1929, Kelly had advanced to the professional ranks and continued to box in Ireland, achieving the Irish professional lightweight championship. He announced his retirement in November 1936, though his last recorded match was in May of 1938. Fighting exclusively in Ireland and England, his career professional record was 54 wins (7 by KO), 22 losses, and 10 draws.
