Biography

During the 1950s Soviet rower Yury Popov represented Trud Leningrad and won multiple national titles, along with medals at the European Championships. During the decade Popov won three Soviet titles; once in the four (1956) and twice in the eight (1958, 1959). His first medal at the European Championships came in 1956 when he won silver as part of the coxed four. This earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Melbourne Games, where the Soviet crew reached the semi-finals in the same event.

One year later Popov won another silver at the European Championships, this time as part of the eight crew. Popov continued to row in the eight, winning bronze in 1958 and 1959, as well as the event at the 1958 Henley Royal Regatta.
