Biography

Luther Jones grew up in Idaho where he starred in football, basketball, and track. He had never rowed before attending the University of Pennsylvania, but captained the freshman crew team which went undefeated. Jones started studying chemical engineering but later switched to business and studied at the Wharton School at Penn, graduating in 1972. He did not row as a senior for Penn but switched to the Vesper Boat Club, with whom he competed at the World and European Championships. He rowed in both the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.

Jones retired from rowing after the 1972 Olympics and started with KMart in Salt Lake City. He later built a long career with Hewlett-Packard, and after 28 years in business, retired to Idaho and began rowing again. During his business career he also earned an MBA from San Francisco State University, while his wife returned to law school.
