Argentinian pistol shooter Juan Casey was of Irish descent. His great-grandfather, John Joe Casey, settled in Argentina in the second half of the 1800s. Juan started competitive shooting at the age of 23 at the Tiro Federal de Junín in Buenos Aires. He originally started as a rifle shooter, until it was suggested some years later that he take up pistol shooting. In the 1970s, he had trials with the national squad and was selected for the 1976 Olympics, where he competed in the 50 metres free pistol event.
