The free pistol was the first shooting event in 1976. As the event started, the national flags were standing straight out, reflecting the strong breeze that affected the shooters all day, despite the high walls that protected the shooting range. Even in the wind, Uwe Potteck (GDR) broke the world record with 573 to win the event easily, by six points, over the previous world record holder, his teammate Harald Vollmar. Austrian Rudolf Dollinger finished third, repeating his bronze medal from 1972.
