Guatemala first competed in the 1932 Olympics with entrants in the Art Competitions. The National Olympic Committee was founded in 1946 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23 April 1947. In sports, Guatemala first competed at the 1952 Olympic Games, and then did not appear again until 1968 but has not missed an Olympic Games since. Guatemala appeared at its only Olympic Winter Games in 1988 at Calgary, with six competitors. In 2012 Erick Barrondo won the first ever medal for Guatemala when he took silver in the men’s 20 kilometer walk in London.
The National Olympic Committee of Guatemala is a holder of the Olympic Diploma of Merit and was awarded with the Olympic Cup in 2007.
