Emil Collan was the son of the editor-in-chief of the same name (1851-1900) of the Perä-Pohjolainen newspaper in Kemi. Emil junior studied at the Commercial Institute at Lübeck in Germany. In 1902 he moved to Billnäs to work as an accountant. Collan later moved to Helsinki as a businessman and then returned to Billnäs in 1917 to become the manager of the ironworks in nearby Pohja. With his wife Ellen Maria (née Littow) he had five children. He was a member of the Finnish trap shooting team at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm.
