Frank Dobson finished second to W. N. Parker in the British Pistol Club annual championship in 1959, and the following year gained selection for the British Olympic shooting team. In Roma, Dobson contested the 50 metres free pistol event but was eliminated in the qualifying round after finishing 30th out of 34 starters.
Dobson founded The Richmond Publishing Company in 1970 with his wife Mary. From 1992-94, Dobson was president of the British Lichen Society, formed in 1958 to study and conserve lichen in both Britain and worldwide. Dobson was first introduced to the world of Botany when he attended the Tiffin Grammar School at Kingston upon Thames, and he went on to write several books about lichen.
