Biography
German sports shooter Sonja Pfeilschifter was a five-time Olympian, participating from 1992-2012. In all appearances she was one of the favorites in the air rifle and small-bore rifle three positions events. Despite that, she never managed a podium finish, due to her nerves. Her best results were an unfortunate fourth and fifth at Sydney in 2000, and two sixth places at Athens in 2004.
Pfeilschifter was far more successful at World Championships, winning 12 gold, three silver, and three bronze medals. She also collected 21 gold medals at European Championships and an additional four silver and six bronzes. Pfeilschifter also won numerous national titles and was 28 times a World Cup winner and won the ISSF World Cup final on five occasions.
Pfeilschifter was named World Sports Shooter in 1998 and 1999, and was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. She was also five times named as German Sports Shooter of the Year in 1998-2000, 2006, and 2011. She retired in 2014 after being diagnosed with a heart disease.
