Biography

Sándor Tölgyesi got to know the sport relatively late, at the age of 20, in the Esztergom Civil Shooting Association, but as a chimney sweep assistant and later a chimney sweep business manager. It was difficult for him to enter the privileged sports circle of the military officers and the town’s gentlemen at the time. Fortunately, his results paved the way for him. He won the individual Hungarian championship in sports pistol six times (1935, 1936, 1937 1942, 1957 and 1959). He became the Hungarian champion in 1959 with the team event. From 1946 to 1968, he was a member of the Budapesti Partizán SC and the MHSZ Központi Lövészklub. In 1968, he returned to his hometown and competed in the Esztergom team until his death.

Between 1936 and 1956, Tölgyesi appeared 14 times in the Hungarian national team. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, he finished in ninth place as the best Hungarian in free pistol. He finished 14th in the same event at the 1948 London Olympics. At the world championships, he was fourth in the free pistol team in 1939 and 1958, sixth in 1937, and fifth individually in 1939. In 1955, he took third place in the team free pistol and fifth place in the military pistol at the European Championships.
