Format50 metres. 60 shots in six series of 10. 600 possible.

The free pistol was shot at 50 metres, with 60 shots fired in six series of 10 shots. The target was .5 metres in outside diameter, with 10 scoring rings. The competition started in the afternoon of 6 August, a cold and rainy day, after the rapid-fire event had finished that morning. The match was limited two hours, which was generally considered very exhausting. The Union Internationale de Tir (UIT) decided to lengthen the event’s duration to 2½ hours after the Olympics. The event was dominated by Sweden’s Torsten Ullman, who had won a bronze medal in rapid-fire pistol. Krempel was in the lead after the first day, but Ullman was already favored after training and his bronze in the rapid-fire pistol. Ullman won by 15 points, scoring 559, with 22 shots in the 10-ring, 36 in the 9-ring, and only one 8-point shot and one 7-point shot. Ullman was World Champion with the free pistol in1933, 1935, 1937, 1947 and 1950; the center-fire free pistol in 1947 and 1954; and the rapid-fire pistol in 1939. His 559 bettered the world record by 12 points.
