Biography

Martin Gison competed as a marksman in five Olympic Games between 1936 and 1964, between age 22 and 50. His preferred events were pistol and small-bore rifle shooting. Gison’s best placing came at the 1936 Berlin Olympics when he placed fourth in the 50 m small-bore rifle event. He was tied for second place with 296 rings with five other competitors. After the countback of the last shots, Gison had to settle for fourth place. During World War II, he had been captured by the Japanese and survived the infamous Bataan Death March in 1942.

After the war, Gison medalled five times at the newly established Asian Games. At the 1954 Manila Games, he won gold in the 25 m rapid fire pistol, silver in the 50 m rifle 3 positions and in the 300 m rifle 3 positions and bronze in the 50 m rifle prone. Four years later in Tokyo, he claimed another silver in the 25 m rapid fire pistol. Martin Gison was inducted into the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame.
