The defending champion, Károly Takács (HUN), but would finish only eighth. The event was won by Ştefan Petrescu of Romania, with Yevgeny Cherkasov (URS) placing second. The bronze medal went to Romania’s Gheorghe Lichiardopol, who had also finished third in rapid-fire in 1952. The range for this event was not fully installed until a day before the event, which prevented the shooters from getting in much practice. Finland’s Pentti Linnosvuo, who lost the shoot-off for bronze, was not prepared for the tie-break, and was only found in a barbershop.
