Biography

Henry Steele started pistol shooting in 1931, after joining the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR), and continued his love of the sport after later becoming a flight lieutenant in the RAF Transport Command. He competed at three Olympics, and gained selection for the 1948 London Games after a tie for first place in the Queen Mary competition at Bisley. Also that year, Steele jointly held both the RAF and NRA Service Rifle titles.

Shortly before his selection for the 1952 Olympics, Steele set several unofficial world rapid-fire pistol shooting records. Going into his third Olympics at Melbourne in 1956, he was second in the Service Rifle Championship at Bisley after a three way tie, and that same year won the RAF Pistol Championship for the third time. Steele also won the NRA gold badge, and gold medal three times, and in 1959 won the British Rapid Fire Championship. He came close to a fourth Olympic selection when he finished fourth in the rapid-fire trials for the 1960 Rome Games.
