Born in Spain in 1940 Abel Vázquez moved to Mexico with his family when he was nine-years-old. From a young age Vázquez worked with his brothers in the family furniture store where he worked on advertising and promoting the business. He was also a skilled rifle shooter, earning a place on the Olympic team for the 1964 Tokyo Games, where he finished 29th in the 50 metres small-bore rifle three positions event. His best performance came three years later when he won a team bronze in the same event at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Vázquez continued to work hard, which saw him start his own business making furniture and kitchens, eventually employing more than 3,500 staff in multiple stores. His brothers Olegario and Mario held multiple senior sporting roles, with both serving as members of the International Olympic Committee.
