Nils Romander’s father was a land and factory owner in the south of Sweden. Nils became a career officer and joined the Svea Artillery Regiment in 1914. He was promoted to ensign in 1916. Two years later, he married Ester Frida Dora Steinbeck, with them having three sons. One of them, Holger Axel Gustav Romander (1921-2020), was to serve as the Prosecutor-General of Sweden and as the National Police Commissioner.
In 1923 Nils was transferred to the Superintendent’s Corps. Promoted to the rank of captain and barracks-officer at the flight academy, he later lived in Riseberga, and from 1946 in Lidingö. His last rank was lieutenant colonel. In Riseberga he also was elected as municipal representative. He was appointed knight of the Order of the Sword and the Order of Vasa. While he was still attending school, Romander was close to winning gold in the military rifle, three positions, 300 metres, his only event at the Stockholm Olympics. With just one shot to go, he was in the lead, but he became nervous and missed the last shot, dropping to fifth place.
