Frans-Albert Schartau was particularly successful at the 1908 Olympic Games in London. There he competed in five events with the free pistol and the small-bore rifle. With the Swedish team in the small-bore rifle, 50 and 100 yards he won silver. Four years later in Stockholm he only participated in the individual events with the duelling pistol.
Schartau was the son of a career officer and followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1899 he entered in the Göta Life Guards as a sub-lieutenant. By 1915 he had been promoted to the rank of captain in this regiment and later advanced to the rank of major. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Sword in 1920 and was also a Knight of the Danish Dannebrog Order and the Italian Order of the Crown.
