Biography

Irén Györffy started to swim at the age of 12 years in the colors of III. ker. TVE. She continued her swimming career in BSE from 1934 and in MUE from 1938. She won the Hungarian championship title in the 100 metres backstroke in 1936 and 1937. In 1936, she also won the championship title with the BSE 4x100 metres freestyle relay and river swimming team.

Györffy was the first Hungarian backstroke swimmer to achieve significant results internationally. Her national record of 1:24.2 in 100 metres backstroke was only broken in 1941. Between 1935 and 1937, she appeared in the Hungarian national team four times. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, she was already eliminated in the preliminaries in the women’s 100 metres backstroke. She got married in 1939 and stopped racing at the young age of 19, and from then on lived only for her family until her early death.
