Irén Zságot began her sports career in the colours of Ferencváros in 1939, then joined UTE in 1944. After World War II Zságot competed for Neményi MADISZ between 1946 and 1948. She then became a diver for BVSC, where she continued her sports career until the end of her twenty-year journey in 1959.
In 1940, when she was just 16 years old, she won her first national championship title, which was followed by 31 more national titles by 1959. She became the sport’s first “Eternal Champion” in Hungary.
Zságot also achieved notable success internationally with her participating in three European Championships. Her best result came in 1947 in Monte Carlo where she won a silver medal in platform diving. In 1954 she placed fourth in the springboard in Turin, and in 1958, at the age of 34, she finished fifth. She also competed at the 1948 London Olympics, finishing ninth in platform diving. In addition to these, she won two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal at the World College Games.
Even after her retirement Zságot remained closely connected to the sport and to BVSC. She continued her work as a coach and achieved great success over many years.
