Graham Finlay boxed for New Zealand at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Finlay was national champion as a light-welterweight in 1954, and then won three consecutive welterweight titles from 1954-57. Finlay and his brothers, Maurice and Vern Tuck, won 13 national titles between 1948-58. Graham Finlay also boxed at the 1958 British Empire Games where he went out in the first round.

Finlay was also a solid rugby league player, playing with Greymouth Marist, and helping them win several West Coast titles and the Thacker Shield in 1959 and 1961.
