New Zealand boxer Brian Maunsell won the national amateur light-welterweight title in 1957, 1959, 1960, and 1963. At the tournament in 1960 Maunsell was also named as the most scientific boxer across all the weight divisions. With his win at the 1963 tournament he earned a place at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics after missing out on the Roma Games four years earlier. In Tokyo he lost his opening fight to the eventual silver medallist Yevgeny Frolov when the referee stopped the contest when Maunsell suffered a cut eye. After the Olympics he turned professional, fighting in seven contests from July 1965 to May 1966. His biggest pro win came in November 1965 when he beat Manny Santos on points to win the New Zealand lightweight title. Maunsell lost the rematch against Santos the following May, with him then retiring from the sport.
