At the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics Zenjiro Takahashi placed fifth in the 100 m freestyle and later changed over to water polo, competing at the Berlin Olympics four years later. At the national championships his best result was a second place in the 100 m freestyle in 1931. He was also known for winning the 50 m freestyle six consecutive times from 1930-35 at the National Student Games. As Shigeo Takahashi he was first in the 1930 and second in the 1934 Far Eastern Games in the 50 m freestyle.
After graduating from Waseda University, Takahashi joined a trading company. In 1948, he founded Yachiyoda Sangyo Co., a successful machine tool trading company. In 1979, under the name Zenjiro Asama he was elected chairman of the Japan Machine Tool Importers Association and was awarded the Yellow Ribbon Medal in 1989 for his business activities.
