Biography

Lajos Baròti was a Hungarian football player and manager. He played from 1928-46 with Szegedi AK, and from 1946-48 with Győri ETO. He won two caps with the national team Between 1939-41

In 1957 Baròti was appointed head coach of the national side. Between then and 1978 he led the side in 117 matches, guiding them to four World Cups between 1958-78. At the 1960 Roma Olympics, and the 1964 European Nations’ Cup, the team finished third. The highlight of his international coaching career was winning the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Baròti’s most successful period as a club coach was from 1967-71 with Újpesti Dózsa Budapest, where he laid the foundations of the club’s golden era. He took the club to the League and Cup double in 1969 and 1970, and won a third consecutive championship in 1971. Baròti also took the club to the final of the 1969 European Fairs Cup, but lost 6-2 on aggregate to Newcastle United over two legs. He enjoyed further successes with Vasas SC and SSW Innsbruck in Austria and, with Benfica Lisboa, he won the Portuguese Supercup in 1980 and the League and Cup double in the 1980/81 season.
