Biography

Born in Winnipeg in 1934 Murray Williamson went on to coach the United States national ice hockey team at two Olympic Games. Williamson was an All-American at the University of Minnesota for the Gophers in 1959, playing in 76 games for the team. After playing semi-pro hockey for a few seasons, he switched his focus to coaching becoming the coach of the St. Paul Steers in the United States Hockey League. By the mid-1960s he had become the US national coach, leading them at three editions of the World Hockey Championships (1967, 1967, 1971) and the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics. After finishing sixth at the 1968 Games in Grenoble, the US team then won silver at the 1972 Sapporo Games. A year later, Williamson founded the Midwest Junior Hockey League and coached the US junior team at the first edition of the World Junior Tournament in Leningrad. He was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame, the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame, the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, and the University of Minnesota Athletic Hall of Fame.
