Oswaldo Fumeiro Alvarez, better known as Vadão, was a Brazilian football manager who took charge of more than a dozen domestic teams, in addition to spending two stints in charge of the women’s national team. Vadão began his management career in 1990 with Mogi Mirim based in São Paulo. After leaving the club in 1994 he then won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série C league title with XV de Piracicaba in 1995. With a handful of further minor successes over the next decade, he then managed the Japanese side Tokyo Verdy for 16 matches in 2005, including winning the Japanese Super Cup. Vadão returned home to continue working with multiple domestic teams, eventually clocking up more than 200 games in charge at Guarani FC.
In 2014 Vadão began his first of two spells as the manager of the Brazilian women’s national team, winning the Copa América Femenina in his first year. He led the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics where they narrowly missed out on a medal when they lost the third-place playoff to Canada. His second stint as the manager of the women’s team spanned from 2017 to 2019, which saw them win another Copa América Femenina title in 2018. One year later Brazil lost to France in the round of 16 at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Vadão being fired from his role as a result.
