Biography

Before getting into refereeing, Edvard Šoštarič played for clubs like Maribor, Železničar Sarajevo, and later Branik. In the early 1960s he also played for SC Eisenstadt in Austria. After retiring from playing Šoštarič returned to Yugoslavia and in 1976 obtained his licence, which allowed him to referee matches in the Yugoslav Top League. Šoštarič continued to work as a referee in domestic football well into the 1980s, and between 1980-86 was on the FIFA International Referees List.

Šoštarič officiated in the 1984 Olympic football tournament, where he refereed the group match between Morocco and Saudi Arabia played at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. He retired and became a refereeing instructor and supervisor in 1986. In his later years Šoštarič served as president of the Slovenian Association of Football Referees. He died in August 2011, three months short of his 70th birthday.
