Following a brief spell as a player Tesfaye Gebreyesus became an international football referee, spending more than 20 years officiating in matches. From 1970 to 1990 Gebreyesus refereed at seven editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, four World Cup qualifiers, and two under-19 FIFA World Cups. In 1984 he also officiated in four matches at the Los Angeles Olympics. After the end of his career, he became the President of both the Eritrean Football Association and the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA). Gebreyesus spent more than 50 years in the sport and was awarded with the Medal of Honor by the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa in 2012.
