Hugh Graham

Prior to graduating from Harvard University in 1955 Hugh Graham competed in figure skating often alongside his sister Margaret Anne Graham. In 1953 the Graham siblings finished second in the pairs competition at the US Championships and third in the pairs at the North American Championships. The following year they repeated their success at the US Championships, in addition to finishing fifth at the World Championships in Oslo. In 1955 Hugh had individual success at the US Championships, finishing third in the men’s singles.

In 1959 Graham graduated from University of Chicago Medical School and then returned to his hometown of Tulsa where he practiced medicine. From 1962 to 1964 he served in the Medical Corps of the US Army, earning the rank of captain. Throughout his medical career he worked as the director of several clinics and spent two separate spells as the chief of paediatrics at St. John’s Medical Centre.

Alongside his medical profession Graham continued to be involved in figure skating throughout his life. He worked as a judge at the Olympics in Lake Placid (1980) and Albertville (1992), in addition to serving as the President of US Figure Skating from 1986 until 1989. In 2004 he was inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame. His daughter Peggy also worked as a judge in the sport, officiating at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
