Paul McSweeney refereed football (soccer) matches at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. He is better known as having played Major League Baseball with the St. Louis Browns, although it was a short career. A second and third baseman, in 1891 McSweeney played in three games with the Browns, getting 3 hits in 12 at-bats, and driving in 2 runs. Known as a top local all-around athlete, he played for Christian Brothers College rugby team in the 1880s and once sparred with heavyweight world champion Jim Corbett. In addition to officiating soccer matches, he was a baseball umpire. McSweeney was a St. Louis native who was born and died there, eventually of colo-rectal cancer.
