Biography

After graduating from the University of Western Australia with a degree in engineering science in the field of geomechanics, Richard Jewell moved to Canada in 1968 to work at a company in Winnipeg. Whilst in Canada, Jewell followed his love of field hockey and became a noted umpire. In 1971 he became a member of the international hockey umpiring panel and officiated at the Pan America Cup in Columbia. One year later he was one of the referees for the hockey tournament at the 1972 München Olympics, officiating in the final. He continued to umpire at major events, including three editions of the World Cup in the 1970s, the 1976 Montréal Olympics, and the 1978 European Cup.

Jewell retired as an umpire in 1979 and was later inducted into the Hockey WA Hall of Champions. During the 1970s he also worked as a lecturer in civil engineering at the University of Western Australia. In 1992 he founded the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, working there until his retirement in 2000.
