Biography

Cheshire’s Stan Boardman was a senior Football League referee for 19 years, and was on the League’s list of referees both before and after World War II. He also officiated in many war-time matches, and was also appointed a FIFA international referee. At the 1948 Olympics, he officiated in three games including refereeing the semi-final between Sweden and Denmark at Wembley Stadium, which he regarded as the highlight of his career. As a new age limit of 48 for Football League referees was set for the 1948/49 season, Boardman quit top-flight refereeing after the Olympics. He continued officiating in other leagues, and his 954th, and last, game was in a Lancashire and Cheshire League match in March 1952.
