Biography

S. Stevens was a member of the Portsmouth Society for Association Referees and the majority of his officiating took place in the Hampshire area. The highlight of his career was in 1948 when he ran the line for referee George Reader in the Olympic qualifying match between the Republic of Ireland and Netherlands at Fratton Park. The Portsmouth ground was one of two grounds, along with Brighton’s Goldstone Ground, to host 1948 Olympic football matches outside London. In 1950 Stevens took charge of the representative match at Portsmouth between a Royal Navy XI and a Surrey XI. He represented Portsmouth referees in regular quiz nights based on the rules and other aspects of the game. Stevens also regularly gave talks on refereeing to various local organisations.
