Biography

Antonio Evangelista was a Canadian football referee who spoke English, Italian, Spanish, and French. His family moved from central Italy to Canada when he was 13-years-old.

At 23 Evangelista started refereeing and attended Canada Soccer’s 1978 FIFA/Coca-Cola World Football Development Seminar in Victoria, British Columbia. He was honored by the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame as a referee, he received the Ray Morgan Memorial Award in 1982, and he was also given Canada Soccer’s Aubrey Sanford Meritorious Service Award in 1992.

Evangelista served on the FIFA Referees list for 15 years from 1977-91, reaching the apex of his refereeing career at the 1984 Olympics, where he officiated the West Germany-Morocco match in Palo Alto.
