Biography

Hans Ranzoni, Jr. was an Austrian graphic artist and son of landscape painter Hans Ranzoni, Sr. (1868-1956). The son specialized in graphic art, namely copperplate engraving. His oeuvre, which won many awards, included book illustrations, bookplates, and templates for official documents. His stamp designs, for example, the second national costume series, became particularly well known.

After serving in World War I, Ranzoni initially enrolled at the Technical College for Mechanical Engineering, but in 1923 attended a nude drawing course at the School of Arts and Crafts. In 1925, he transferred to the engraving class at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (Institution for Graphic Education and Research) in Wien (Vienna). From 1929 he worked as a freelance engraver. In World War II, A bombing raid destroyed his apartment and all his artistic belongings, records, working tools, and collections. 1945-61 he taught at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt.
